Garnet – The Birthstone of January

Deep red in colour, garnet has a lot of legends and mysticism associated with it. Diamond may be a girl’s best friend, but remember, this is just a modern-day belief. There was a time when garnet was the preferred gemstone for both the queens, and commoners. This is the birthstone of January borns, but others can wear the gemstone too. Bright in colour, it is in contrast to the cold first month of the year.

Garnet is also the stone of second marriage anniversary. The wonderful transparency will make the jewel shine beautifully in a ring, necklace or earring.

History of Garnet as a Gemstone

The name comes from “Carbunculus”, which is Latin, meaning burning piece of ember or coal, in reference to its bright colour.

The stone was first used by jewelers in Bohemia, which is the Central Europe of today, sometime in the 16th century, and it became very popular too.  The King of Saxony had a huge garnet of 465 carats. The stone was used frequently in jewellery during the Victorian era. Garnet used to be represented by the sun in Spanish astrology. Pomegranate was a favourite in old Spain, and so was the garnet. Garnet became the gift of love for a lot of people, especially gifted to a loved person before he or she goes on a trip. This January birthstone is believed to be a traveler’s stone. It is said, there was a garnet lantern in Noah’s Ark to help him navigate in the night.
